What is FiberNet and Fiber Optic Technology?

FiberNet is our ultra high speed Internet and phone service that uses Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) technology.  FTTP refers to the use of fiber optic cables to carry digital information directly to homes and businesses. These cables are made up of hundreds or thousands of fiber optics, which are long thin strands of pure glass about the diameter of a human hair.

FTTP replaces the copper and coaxial cables that telephone and cable companies previously installed in neighborhoods. Fiber has a higher bandwidth capacity to easily transmit applications like telephone and Internet, and has plenty of capacity left over for other applications in the future.

What are some of the advantages of Fiber Optic Technology?

Fiber Is Faster – It provides the fastest Internet connection speeds with virtually unlimited bandwidth capability. It accommodates today’s increasing demand for faster Internet connections as well as the advanced applications of tomorrow.

Fiber Offers the Greatest Reliability and Quality – Fiber is the best at handling shock and vibration in bad weather. Plus, no dropped connections or losing speed at peak hours like the cable company. No dropped calls or static to disrupt phone conversations.

Fiber Offers Future Flexibility – With fiber, our ability to keep expanding your bandwidth capabilities into the future is almost unlimited. While other providers struggle to squeeze higher speeds out of their technologies, FiberNet can easily grow to meet your needs, and we’ll have flexibility to deliver additional services such as video, TV, and more in the years to come.

How much bandwidth does fiber technology offer?

Fiber optic technology has the capability to transport virtually unlimited bandwidth, which serves today’s high demand for high speed Internet as well as advanced applications for tomorrow. Our FiberNet packages currently offer speeds up to 1 Gig*, and thanks to the unique flexibility of optical fiber, we can add capacity as needed without customers having to change a thing in their day to day routine.

*Please note – all speeds are not offered in all GSC service areas. Call for coverage details.

Will switching to fiber technology increase the cost of my Internet or phone service?

Our upgrade to fiber technology will NOT increase the cost of your current telephone and Internet services. As a company have decided to provide fiber at no additional cost to our customers in order to ease the transition to this new technology. For example, if you currently subscribe to our Quickstream Ultimate DSL package and you switch to our FiberNet 25 Internet service, your monthly rate will stay the same.

Does upgrading to fiber technology add monetary value to my home?

A recent study by RVA Market Research, surveyed home buyers and developers. It found that fiber-to-the-home adds about $5,000 to the purchase price of an individual dwelling.
